Their is a bill in committee now in ND to restrict nonresident trappers. All 33 of them last year.
If the NTA is fighting for their members constitutional rights on this issue I am not aware of it.
The FTA will have contact information on their website with in the hour and is actively involved AS ALWAYS!

man, it's a social club like the VFW or the Elks, can't expect much except socials. Took me along time to figure that out, but legally a social club is very limited in what they can do in politics. IRS gets cranky.
Where is the NDTA on this issue?

Two different associations in ND. The one association on the eastern end of the state was started by Rick Tischafer and has pushed this for a couple of years now.

Rick Tischafer is married.
Ironically west of Devils Lake I'd being named the "trouble" area.
Stephanie Tucker is the furbearer biologist. Her husband used to work with Tischafer.
Yes, Tischafer is NTA. Ran for NTA president against Dave Sollman. The lesser evil won in that election in my opinion.

Robert again the NTA is not set up to come in like the Calvary, if the ND fur hunters and trappers assc wants help they need to contact NTA, ND FTA would also request help.
The issue being this is a state issue all the way, it will be decided inside the confines of ND and is more of a resident versus non resident not an anti trapping bill.
What effect did either the NTA or FTA have in South Dakota when the same issue was being discussed?

I remember once when Minnesota tried to sue North Dakota over the number of goose permits and said it was illegal to limit the number of goose license sold because they where breaking interstate commerce the judge found in favor of North Dakota stating that wildlife recreation was never intended to be covered under the commerce clause.
I would love to see All states allow non resident trappers the same dates and regs but the laws tell us that is something that we cannot nor IMO would we want to force upon each state for various reason that would be a real negative to trappers and trapping.

ADC, The FTA is involved working to defend trappers rights...even your constitutional rights.
The NTA does not care are about their members rights and continue to prove this by their inactivity on these issues.

As for SD, who knows?? Maybe if the NTA had taken action the results might have been different. Guess we will never know though will we??

Robert I do know, I was working for the state during this issue being discussed. I remember when we had an open discussion on this topic at our annual ADC meeting .
The NTA or FTA had little bearing on the outcome as it was a state issue and was going to be decided by people who live inside of the state. Outside voices and concerns hold less value on issues such as these as the power that be are looking to appease a certain faction of state residents. Sad but true.
I wish you the best in the ND issue , but really the NTA or FTA will have little bearing on the outcome of NR trapping rules and regs.
From what I hear though this is being pushed by a member of the NDFTA not the NDFHTA.
Insecure people want some security is what a lot of this boils down to.

As usual your sources are wrong. In ND it is a sportsman's association from the Devils Lake area that did the leg work.
Tischafer got burned pretty good two years ago as over 30 trappers called NAFA ccomplaining about him.

What is even worse is the NTA has not done anything yet towards protecting their memberships constitutional rights to trap on an equal level with resident trappers to my knowledge!

Win or loose in ND at least the FTA acted in good faith representing their membership!
NTA members had NO representation AGAIN!

Robert the leg work? What is the name of this group?
What constitutional,right is that Robert?
I think your talking about the STATE of North Dakota amendment which states : “ Hunting, trapping, and fishing and the taking of game and fish are a valued part of our heritage and will be forever preserved for the people and managed by law and regulation for the public good.[1][2]
That protects the people of the state, not you or I who have no voters rights inside the state. Missouri and others have yet to pass such an amendment to the STATE constitution , the difference being we are non residents and that amendment means little to us as the rules and regs are set fourth by the state.
I have met Rick only once years back, what does his NAFA deal have to do with the issue at hand?
Again you miss the main point this is a states rights issue not a federal rights issue, you know how many people are upset with laws and regs in each and every state on a yearly basis? be it trapping, fishing or hunting? Good grief. hard for non residents to gain much traction on issues such as these unless you have people inside the state working and pulling for us. Which you find little in doing so, as we are not tax payers or live and work inside the state.
When your a game and fish employee your always making the wrong decisions in the eyes of residents of the state, as people have their own motives and agendas to push for or against things. Two sides to all of it, yet still remains a state rights issue.
Again what outcome did FTA have in South Dakota? What impact did they make?
hard to answer when the answer is none ................
It is No secret your an NTA basher and that is fine again everyone has their right to opinion and thought. yet when you make the claim that FTA has done far more one should have some facts as to what that FAR more is?

Randy Becker / ADC, Keep your posts short otherwise No one (including me) will rad your crap.
Your constitutional right under the Priveledges and Immunities clause. Trapping is a commercial activity.
Do you feel the vocation of trappers should be discriminated against while it is illegal to discriminate against the Maytag repairman???
As for only bashing the NTA....NOT true, I point out the facts! If the FTA doesn't represent trappers I'll crucify them as well!

Robert trapping is a commercial activity in your mind, so far not in the eye of any court in the land.
Trapping is set by seasons and dates by each STATE,most wildlife for the majority is controlled at the state level. You have commercial cat fishing and other species in some states, you think the states can't do away with or close a commercial harvest if they wanted to? They sure could and it would be the game and fish doing so. Some states only allow commercial harvest on certain bodies of water as well. That is legal for them to do so.
Snapping turtle changes case in point:
A 2001 study of turtles in the Weaver Bottoms area of the Upper Mississippi River found reduced numbers of common snapping turtles and suggested that harvesting and unintended drowning by commercial fisherman might be responsible (Pappas et al. 2001). Subsequently, updates to Minnesota's commercial turtle harvesting rules were made and implemented in 2004. These changes included limiting the number of traps which could be used, restricting turtle licenses to Minnesota residents, and putting a moratorium on the sale of new licenses. Anyone who held a license prior to the rule changes was permitted to renew it and they may pass their license down one generation to their relatives. Additionally, trappers must now keep a daily log of where their traps are located and how many turtles they harvest. These logs must be submitted monthly during the trapping season (March - November). Failure to submit this report to the Minnesota DNR can result in nonrenewal of a harvester's license. The DNR created a database in 2004 to maintain the trapping data, which will allow for greater monitoring of common snapping turtle harvest and population levels in Minnesota.

So my POINT is even with a NR season and the words commercial used the states still have the authority and power to limit or exclude NR from activity if they warrant such needs to be done.
I feel some think they get into a state that they are there for good? Simply not the case and your going to be hard pressed to get a state to word such openings for NR as a commercial harvest, the words commercial are not going to be real trapper friendly in some areas I will leave it at that.
The best way is to work with the presidents and voices of groups in those states and try to come to a common sense agreement on NR seasons. yes it will take work but feel it could be done. Set up meetings on such. The issue being 10 people are a small voice sad but true.
many states have dealt with the commercial trapping by having separate nuisance wildlife license.
