I went out to the lake today and used my hudson bay to cut down a old dead small tree and make fire wood. Then i made some tinder and ember nest. It was very windy and for the most part every thing was wet. I was able to make an ember with charcloth useing my firepiston. And after placeing the ember in its nest and blowing for a while i had a small hand held fire. I fed it tinder and had a pretty good fire going soon. I love my fire piston and i highly sugest it. Its from wilderness solutions.

I want one!.....Actually I got one I made and it barely works (my fault). Nobody knew what a firepiston was until John Knowles wrote about it and made a sketch in "Cache Lake Country". Some folks from my generation developed the idea and started mail-order companies. I will have to spend alot to get a good one. (I see cheapos made out of pvc)

Krank mines made from cocobolo and is very strong. I have had sometimes when i went too fast and sliped and should have broke the shaft but it is still solid. The key is to patiently and carefully push the rod quickly. Not hurry and go fast. There is a difference ive learned.

Well let me refraise thet. It is about fire. And a fire piston is a lighter. But bush craft is a hobby of sorts. And its really about keeping in touch with previous methods of fire makeing and survival skills that were important long before conventional methods of lighting a fire with a lighter and living in a house. I enjoy doing things the old fashioned way as a learning exsperiance. There may come a day when you cant buy a lighter because of hyper inflation. And it may be important to have a backup.

Here is my char cloth tin i got it from wilderness solutions too. It was like 2 or 3 dollars has a hole in the top. Any tin will do you could probably make one with a couple coke cans. You can make char with old strips of dinem or cotton balls. Or any 100% cotton. Make sure its all cotton or it will melt. I bought mine cause i figure its a life time purchase. But im gona make a tin with cans if i dont forget. The fire piston will light other tinders as well such as milkweed pith and tender fungus or punk wood. Wilderness solutions has blank piston kits that you can asembel your self. I would check that out if i wanted to make my own.

Gas scares me. I keep diesel around for that stuff. If I gotta use gas then I use a tracer round ......
