luked , I believe that even if it goes into effect it will be in next years book. Once those books are printed they typically don't make it into the law until the following season. I could be wrong about this. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong about this.

About the crawfish ... The crawfish bait ban passed, got printed in the rule book, then suspended when the bait sellers found out (the MDC did not inform the public about the law, not even in their commission meeting summary).
The bait sellers and fish farmers were called to one committee meeting after another to wear them down, then the MDC was called to a meeting by state reps and was told to make a decision within a week (this week) and quit running these people around. Haven't heard the outcome yet.
We asked the MDC when they were going to inform the public in a general news release that they had just slot-banned the most popular and abundant size of bluecat in south central Missouri, starting March 1st, 2014. The MDC news editor said they had that story on hand and would report it real soon. Then we received an email stating they would let everyone know this fall. It will be late this fall, after the layout for the new rules book is ready to go (same as they did the crawfish ban) and there will be precious little time for catfishermen to realize they just got screwed big time.
So far, the media hasn't reported the news about the slot-ban. If you've ever doubted the MDC has the media in its back pocket, ask yourself why this (and the crawfish bait-ban) remains unreported to this day.

I have heard alot about the crawfish ban and to date have heard of NO one supporting. From what I was told concerning the meeting with the state reps, the MDC did not fare well.

And probably will not hear an outcome this week. The MDC is not held accountable to the state legislature so will probably drag this out and do what they want anyway.

The point I'm trying to make is you have given your input based on your observation and emotions. Both of which aren't based on any scientific data or qualifications. This is what happens to states who have legislative actions applied to wildlife and fisheries management.Biologist and resourse managers aren't perfet, but they are more qualified to make decisions on these things than the common sportsman. We might not always like what they present to us,but they have to have the resourses first in their mind to do their job.Fortunatly, the MDC does have a period that the public can add their input and this is figured into the equestion. The resourses and quality of such resourses has to come first.
I'm sure your too young to remember when deer and turkey were a rare sight in Mo.Now we have one of the best turkey hunting inthe country. All of this was done by people that manage our resourses, even as we lose more and more habitat every day. That coupled with more folks vieing for the same resourses, make this a tremendously hard job.

Compared to what they were as they were expanding,I'll agree Robert.Trouble with nesting birds and weather is something we or nobody else can control. The farm I turkey hunt has seen a dramatic rise in birds the last two years, but then again,I kept a few traps out for possum and coons thru the whole season. It's only a couple of miles from the house ,so it was a easy and quick check.Them egg eating suckers get no break there lol

Agreed with John, the weather is the reason our turkey numbers have been so low the last few years... 5 years of bad hatches.... the last two years we have had good hatches and this year we should see the prolly the highest harvest in 10 years...

Degrees don't make you smart.... Said that for a long time.... Just because someone is "qualified" (ie. degree) doesn't necessarily mean they will make smart decisions... This combined with the obvious "Blow Off" of the public input just Chaps my rear-end.... I do remember when deer numbers where low, tho prolly not as low as you remember them, LOL..... I also remember when doe were lottery by county, and they did that for WAAAAY TOOOO LONG, resulting in MO being one of the highest deer-vehicle collision states in the country..... another example of poor resource management...

Don,do you subscribe to the e-mail alerts from the MDC? I don't remember how I got started with it,but they wil e-mail you when stuff comes up for public meeting and such. They also have the minutes of their meetings. It is a good way to be informed on what's happening.
When the deer nimbers were low,so was traffic on the roads. With so much land being lost, the carrying capasity of the land is changing. This in itself causes problems between man and nature. I know all too well about deer collisons. I've hit 7 myself and had numerous near misses lol. You get the deer numbers down where there is minumal collisons, then sportsman wil start crying about not enough deer. I'd hate to have the job the MDC has managing the numbers to make everyone happy. They are damnede if they do and damned if they don't.
