Hummph. I think a nite-latch makes a trap PERFECT. Ready to go. No doubts. No peeking with my forty-eight year-old eyes trying to see if I'm "just right" in where my dog is in relation to the notch. Of course, none of it works if everything isn't squared up to start with. And laminations are the LAST thing I do to make my trap "better". As a matter of fact, I'd take nite-latching over base-plating. Now, extra swivels are a MUST no matter what. Good chain, you betcha.
All that being said, I caught a ton of animals years ago without anything except leveling the pan. And some of the traps I used in the 70's and 80's were junk compared to what I have now.

Back in the day when I lived in IL, we caught all kinds of critters with traps that wasn't modified at all, except for maybe stronger springs. Needles to say, all my traps today are base-plated, center swiveled, extra swivels, better chain, laminated and night latched... Its funny how things change in time.
