I always night latch all of mine. I think it provides a better pan set and a crisper trap fire. I have also laminated some of my duke 1.5's to catch yotes and bobcats with.

Ok ill try it again we font have actual internet its all on my phone because we live to far out to get high-speed its all dial up. that link helped a lot however I didn't see anything about pan leveling? That's my main issue right now.

You will HAVE to file the dogs on those traps. They have a "bump" on the end of them from where they were cut, an it'll add about eight pounds of pan tension if you don't get rid of it.

Ok I think I figured it all out I filed to bump off I bent the dog post in and I filed the dog a hair shorter because by the time I got my pan level the dog wouldn't release. I trapped all last season with that bump on my dog with not a catch ,maybe that's why.

the Dukes are nice traps but they do take a little more work to make them a good trap. the dogs need worked over so to get rid of the "bump" the pan also needs squared off on most of the ones i have also. this will make it fire crisp and clean...nightlatch is also a good thing as well.

Good tips! so can someone please explain how to "square off a pan"................or what that means on the pan the slot where the dog goes in...square it off some and that will be the same place for your night latch. kinda looks like this.....gonna be a bad pic but best i can do on this comp. but you will get the idea. A is the Pan...B is where you want to square off and C is where your night latch would go. that will hopefully give you an idea

jsut something i have been told by a lot. its supposed to help the trap fire crisp...since you take and square off the dog and then also square the pan like that it just makes it fire cleaner if you will there wont be any bumps or uneveness with the 2
and ya it sure aint no davanci painting thats for sure but it works LOL

Think of a trap, new out of the box, as an old engine that is in need of a tune-up. By doing all of the steps above, the "engine" now runs great.
Things like nite-latching are like adding a cam and headers, with a three-angle valve job, and...

night latching your traps is not nessecary to make your trap "better" its all about positioning the trap pan on hair trigger so to speak and that can be done without filing a night latch, its ok if your setting traps at low light,or if your vision is poor, but otherwise not nessecary.Pan tension and squareing the dog and notch are more important and if your trap pan is touching the levers when the trapjaws are closed then the pan should be modified so it isnt touching the levers. things like music wire springs,HD baseplates, lamination rods, good chain,hd swivels, thats what makes your trap better.
