Does anyone have a bait recipe made from fish they would share? Looking for a bait to use in dog proofs and conibear boxes that is attractive to mink and raccoon.

As far as the mink go, at least where you're trapping, I'd have to say the really prefer fresh fish. The fresher the better as opposed to pre-made bait. Try a little Lennons lure with your sets. I like pocket sets but a good blind set is hard to beat. Don't forget the fish oil....

I use caryfish oil mix with weasel gland. Why I use weasel gland.Mink do not like weasel in their area and they will fight to death over it.It just like coyote don't like fox in his area so they will kill fox.I sometime just plan use weasel gland in the dirthole set for a change up on the river bank.Yes fox and coon will hit it too.But like hopalong said blind set work the best .

I need to post some pics of my trapping area. Not much there. One place is strictly a boat dock. Its public so no sets on land for fido to get into. The other one is a little bit more relaxed. Ive got full run of the grounds which is a resort. It uas 2 docks on it and the shoreline isnt much. All nice Nd smooth down to the water. If people are catching fish, my odds improve for catching mink. If there are no people or scraps out, I am pretty much out of luck. I did pick up a nice little piece of ground for next year. About 80 acres of woods and fields.

I don't get it .Is this the only place you can trap .Why not look for other place to trap like river and creek.Mink will go a long way and I am sure you can get him away from dogs .You see mink will alway go to inlet or outlet and same with otter. So why not set the trap there so you can get away from dogs

Perhaps we could meet in the middle somewhere next season. Run up or down the river in my boat. I'm telling ya there's some good minkin' to be had. I know your busy at the hospital but if we plan it out you may discover its worth your time. I sell to a taxidermist but they're no problem to put up either. Some good stuff upstream from the dock too.

I think I have a deal worked out for use of a boat next year. One of the docks was talking very favorable about it.

Taneycomo has an amazing amount of mink around there.I don't think I've ever fished there that I didn't see 3 or 4 in a days time and that's in daylight hours.

Yes we do. Yesterday a resort owner said a guest saw a mink with a crawdad at the resort. I've doubled my catch from last year but still don't "know" how to catch the mink. I am going to try to set more boxes next year. They are just handy and you don't have to worry about someone taking off with your stuff. It'd be pretty hard to conceal a 2 foot box!

I think other fish species would work also. Maybe some anise too. Brian- I would use coni-boxes with 155s and if you want to hide them then set an "uninteresting" cardboard box over them. Maybe build a coni-box with a 155 at each end....

as far as coon bait for dp's, i will tell you to use something that is different, a dry mix is what will work the best, coon eat and smell fish their hole life, go for a different smell, that is what will bring them in, think if you ate soup for 10 years, and someone put a cheeseburger in front of you, same concept, go for at least 3 or 4 different smells, that is a tip from an Iowa trapper that i know takes 1500 coon every year, and it has worked well for me, has taken 3 years to perfect a bait that i make, and workes very well, good luck

In my opinion/experience you can set 50 baited sets then 50 lured sets all with mink in mind an the lure will outperform the baited sets 10+-1, id not 20+_1. Crawdads are a preferred mink food. Mink also like a lightly tainted mouse bait but if i was you and wanted mink and lots of them buy a selection of Russ carman mink lures and sharpen your knives. Ive caught close to 90 mink this year, not bragging.. Just an example, few were incidentals, blind sets, barricades etc. few were baited sets, rest were carman lures and salvaged mink urine in a few. Few of the urine ones had lure also. Of the lured ones carman outperformed all other lures at least 3-1. Maybe even better then that and we gangset with several sets in the sane area with 2+ different lures.

I've had good luck with blended rough fish( 5 lbs or so) couple cups of fish oil, ounce of shellfish oil, ounce of loganberry or cherry oil, some beaver castor, couple cups of sodium benzoate, couple cups of glycerine. Won't freeze, won't rot, pretty sticky, good for smear sets, pockets, DPs, boxes. thicken with dry cat food if needed. Can make a batch pretty quick. Works for me. Stir once a day for 3 days or so for sodium Benz to take effect.
