What kind of beaver traps, or traps in general, did they use in the 1700's and 1800's?

most were made by local smiths. Long springs , very large ( by today's standard ) and heavy. Most used a single spring. Hope this helps. Bill

Makes you wonder how many horses they had to use to haul all that heavy stuff in and then bring all those beaver pelts back out. Alot more than just one I'll bet.

Hack most there old beaver traps or those that had any were about the size of a #4 1/2 wolf usually single springs. or they used leather snares.those who could keep there scalp usuually had 2-3 horses or a horse and a good mule. most prob didnt own more than a doz traps if that many.figure 4 dead falls were the main tool in there arsenal.

That's makes alot more sense. Can't imagine trying to set traps and having to keep an eye out for people or critters that wanted me dead. Would kinda make it hard to concentrate I would think.

How is that any different than the life you live today? I mean, the part about watching out for folks wanting you dead...?!?
